1983 Amy Winehouse was born this day! Thank you for the music, you fascinating, talented, incredible muse of a person. I am so grateful for the years you were on this planet Xx
September 2nd, 1971 - Grateful Dead's former manager was arrested after disappearing with over $70,000 of the bands money. This happened on multiple occasions...
HAHAHAHAH It is appalling to me just how bad popular music has become. The fact that people consider Taylor Swift an "artist" is preposterous! Just because you write your own terrible song, doesn't make it NOT a terrible song...so angering.
BUT in an attempt not to bash what I hate, and to promote what I love...let's listen to a beautiful, talented songwriting female to wash this disgusting taste out of our mouths ;)
1970 Simon and Garfunkels album Bridge Over Troubled Water was at No.1 on the UK album chart, The Beatles were at No.2 with 'Let It Be' and Bob Dylan was at No.3 with 'Self Portrait.'
Look how good popular music used to be....SIGH Bridge over Troubled Water-

MOST Powerful Quotes about the late, great Jerry Garica <3
“There’s no way to measure his greatness or magnitude as a person or as a player. He really had no equal. His playing was moody, awesome, sophisticated, hypnotic, and subtle. There’s no way to convey the loss.” - BOB DYLAN
“I feel your silent laughter at sentiments so bold, that date to step across the line to tell what must be told, so I’ll just say I love you, which I never said before, and let it go at that old friend the rest you may ignore.”- ROBERT HUNTER
“I see him in my dreams all the time. I hear him when I’m on stage. I would say I can’t talk to him, but I can. I don’t miss him. He’s here. He’s with me.” - BOB WEIR
“Jerry had this ineffable sweetness and vulnerability, even when he was playing his wildest up-in-the-spheres stuff. It’s something you don’t really see that often in musicians working in this field. We never really talked about this, because it was so obvious to all of us, but he knew he wasn’t making that music; it was like he was just up there quoting or transcribing what it was that was being given to him or coming through him, as we all were in the best moments. That’s the goal that we strive for, that we still strive for.” - PHIL LESH
“Where do you begin? There’s so much to say about him. He was a benign, lovable guy and he was also a magic man, a shaman. There was a feeling of going out in the world with kindness that Jerry represented. That shines through beyond all the other stuff.” - MICKEY HART
“Jerry was the best musician I ever played with. He was 100 percent music. Every pore, every bit of his body, every molecule, was music, whether he liked it or not. He was like a Mile Davis or a Coltrane or somebody like that – just completely locked into it. I always felt that I could hear in his music him talking about things at a much deeper level than what appeared on the surface. There aren’t many musicians who have that gift – to be really profound.” - BILL KREUTZMANN
“Something that immediately comes to mind when I think of Jerry is his almost total aversion to self-aggrandizement of any kind.”- GARY LAMBERT
1970, Janis Joplin bought a headstone for the grave of her greatest influence Bessie Smith at the Mont Lawn Cemetery in Philadelphia. Blues singer Smith died in 1937 after being refused admission to a whites only hospital.
"This tour was magical. This band flourished in so many ways. To learn each others' moves as people and musicians, so as to support each other on stage and off made every night a beautiful adventure. I grew up a lone wolf in a bedroom practicing my guitar, and all I ever really craved was community. The community I feel now between my brothers and sisters in this band and crew, and the connection between everyone in the audience from the front row to the back, to those who listened from couches and cars, to those who come up to me and say more with their eyes than their words in their attempt to tell me what this means to them - I will never forget it, because I will never stop feeling it. We're together now. I'm honored to be one of many musicians in the larger community of the GDEU (Grateful Dead Extended Universe.) And it must be said - to Jerry: what a light you are that I could bask in your shadow. ❤️⚡️🌹💀 love you all.." -John Mayer
2002, After an absence of 37 years, Bob Dylan returned to the Newport Folk Festival (now known as the Apple and Eve Newport Folk Festival) where he performed a 2 hour show of 19 songs, wearing a false beard and a wig. Songs played included: Subterranean Homesick Blues, 'Desolation Row', 'Positively 4th Street', 'The Wicked Messenger', 'Like A Rolling Stone' and 'Mr. Tambourine Man'.
1968, The Doors started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Hello I Love You', the group's second US No.1. The Doors scored 8 top 40 US hits from 67-71.
1942 Jerry Garcia was born this day! Thank you for the music, the inspiration, the light & the joy that still lights up my world all these years later...
Amy Winehouse passed away 5 years ago today. She was a legendary artist who channeled her emotions through music powerfully. She had a beautiful, authentic soul, I miss her dearly!
Just finished my run with the Dead and Company Summer tour, and had the most soul filling, magical musical experience of my life! (I'm too young to have ever seen Jerry live) Didn't get to see these live, and they are some of my favorites :)
1941 Born on this day, Robert Hunter, American lyricist, singer-songwriter and poet, best known for his work with the Grateful Dead and for collaborating with singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. An early friend of Jerry Garcia, they played together in bluegrass bands (such as the Tub Thumpers).
In honor of my Dead and Co run starting this Monday in Camden- I am going to make my dream Setlist as songs of the day.
TODAY - Box of Rain
They had it right to start off the Fare the Well tour with this beautiful, powerful, Phil Lesh song. Bob Weir has stated they hope to do this one in the Summer tour because it is right in John's wheelhouse. How about Monday?! ;)
Sorry, I'm obsessed with the musical union of John Mayer and the remaining members of the Grateful Dead. Truth is, I underestimated Mayer's talents and pegged him as an arrogant, albeit handsome Pop Star. He is a truly gifted musician, guitar master, and exceptional songwriter.
Nothing is more satisfying than a little redemption, and my opinion of this man has done a 180. He has tapped into the magic of the Grateful Dead and is recreating it for Deadheads alike, including the younger generation of fans who never got to see Jerry Garcia live in action. It is amazing to see Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann with an infusion of chemistry playing off of Mayer and Burbridge. Words cannot express my gratitude, excitement and appreciation for this truly magical musical experience I get to be a part of.
"You need music, I don't know why...We need magic, and bliss, and power, myth, and celebration and religion in our lives, and music is a good way to encapsulate a lot of it."

I have to apologize...I am having my 100th love affair with Amy! She has been dominating my music selection the past few days and I can't seem to pick any other songs of the day ;)
She was such a remarkable woman, musician, artist and soul. Even after her death, pieces of her soul remain in the music she left behind. I have never seen a musician infuse emotion the way that she did in her own lyrics and music, as well as covers. This woman gripped me 10 years ago now and I have never experienced anything like it!
